A thin spot in keyword data has a shape, and the second source follows that shape. French volume, and the questions around a term, go to HaloScan. International rank and backlink totals go to SE Ranking. A volume or difficulty figure from DataForSEO Labs, its keyword database, that looks off gets a second read before anyone buys another base. A backlink total that needs a live or removed answer gets a live check, then stops.
Search Console keeps a free record of queries and impressions for sites you control. Cost per click is what an advertiser pays for one click.
Which Gap Gets Which Second Source
| Gap you hit | Second source that fills it | What a test costs | Stop when |
|---|---|---|---|
| French keywords read thin, questions around them missing | HaloScan, for French volume, cost per click, and competition | A limited free test each month, then pay per use | It agrees with Search Console on the terms you sell, same dates |
| International rank or backlink totals need cover | SE Ranking, for rank across engines and for backlinks | Growth, about $223.20 a month | Positions on the terms you sell hold, and totals stop changing the pages you would build |
| A Labs volume, difficulty, or cost-per-click figure looks off | A second read via SEO Utils or Keywords Everywhere | About $0.05 a keyword search on OpenSEO's estimator | The head term agrees, and the leftover gap is long-tail you would not build |
| A backlink count needs a live or removed answer | Common Crawl first, then DataForSEO with spam filtered out | $0.06 for DataForSEO's 1,000-row backlink example | You know which links still exist and which are missing |
When French Keywords Read Thin
HaloScan exposes over 260 million French keywords with search volume, cost per click, and competition and difficulty, through an API that includes batch jobs and a limited number of free keyword searches each month. An MCP server, a connector an assistant calls in plain language, is wired for automated plans and gap analyses.
Someone running sites from Claude Code, with HaloScan connected, said one keyword comes back without opening the interface. Around that keyword the return includes phrases that contain it, neighboring queries, synonyms, and questions. The keyword line itself carries volume, cost per click, competition, seasonality, category, the results page for that query, and the keyword golden ratio, title matches set against monthly volume.
In that same exchange, someone reworking a process asked whether to start on pay-per-use DataForSEO or on HaloScan, and noted the two are not the same thing. The reply named HaloScan or Ranxplorer and said both have an API. It also said DataForSEO had been described as quite thin on data.
On September 14, someone rebuilding a stack on a reasonable budget named one source per job: DataForSEO as the base, HaloScan for France, and SE Ranking for international when the market needs it. They prefer buying the raw data through an API to paying several hundred euros for an interface they would use only about 20 percent of. They described DataForSEO as tracking many fewer keywords than Semrush and Ahrefs, and they add a second source on important reports for that reason.
On September 28, someone preferred paying an API according to need. Ranxplorer, they wrote, has an interesting French keyword base, and you can complement it with DataForSEO or HaloScan when you need more. Subscriptions, in that note, are over. Keep an interface subscription only for a team that opens it every week.
When International Rank or Backlinks Run Thin
Rank tracking returns position, visibility, a traffic forecast, and history across Google, Bing, and Yahoo, on desktop and mobile. Feature flags mark snippets, reviews, videos, and AI Overview placements. The same calls collect the top 100 competitor URLs and can send a Slack alert when a high-value keyword drops.
Backlink calls return totals with referring domains, IPs, and subnets, and they filter dofollow against nofollow (nofollow withholds ranking credit), text against image, redirects, and anchors. Scoring includes InLink Rank for a page, Domain InLink Rank for a domain, and the pace of new links against lost ones.
Connectors cover an MCP server plus Make, n8n, and Looker Studio, so scheduled positions can land in a dashboard without a manual export.
The Growth plan starts at about $223.20 a month and includes 300,000 credits. Backlink pulls are listed at about $0.000179 per returned link or domain. Dividing the monthly price by 300,000 comes to $0.000744 per credit only if every credit costs the same. The per-link figure is a different unit. Check the current Growth price before you budget the floor.
Set that floor next to DataForSEO pay-go. DataForSEO's backlink pricing page shows $0.06 as the total for its 1,000-row example. Dividing $223.20 by $0.06 gives 3,720 pulls at that example size. OpenSEO's pricing estimator puts a keyword search at about $0.05 at typical result limits, and dividing $223.20 by that $0.05 gives about 4,464 searches. Carry the monthly floor when international rank and backlink pulls run every week. Stay on the pay-go slice while the term list is still a short test.
Someone who has used SE Ranking for years wrote that it "works great for my needs", that Semrush or others have "more accurate numbers", and that SE Ranking is "Way cheaper". A builder of UpperSearch, "an affordable alternative to Ahrefs or Semrush", wrote "DataforSEO for now" and "Will add more providers after launch". A Spanish-language comparison laid seven SEO data APIs against DataForSEO and named real per-request prices, endpoints, coverage of Spain, and MCP support.
When a Labs Number Looks Off
On September 10, the maker of SEO Utils announced that an upcoming version would check search volume, keyword difficulty, cost per click, and more from different data sources, with DataForSEO Labs no longer the only endpoint.
The same maker's version 2.4.0 note adds a choice of six DataForSEO sources for those metrics: DataForSEO Labs, Google Ads Live, clickstream-normalized, Bing-normalized, DataForSEO Search Volume, and Clickstream Bulk, plus a default source and a source picked per check. Each volume carries a source label and a month. The label reads "No data" when the chosen source has nothing, and a missing volume shows as a dash where it used to show 0.
On September 23 the same maker wrote that Keyword Explorer can pull live data directly from Google Ads: fresh search volumes, plus keyword ideas the DataForSEO Lab database never had. That pull is the Google Ads Live source named above.
Someone comparing DataForSEO with Ahrefs and Semrush wrote that the results often differ, and that keyword work now runs through Keywords Everywhere. The same person had asked OpenSEO, an open-source alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs, to let them bring their own DataForSEO key and Keywords Everywhere key. That request is pay per query on keys you already hold.
Pull the same head term in the second source. Hold the keyword, the location, the language, and the date fixed. Keep the term when both sources agree it deserves priority. When only the long-tail leaves disagree, leave the extra base off the list.
When a Backlink Total Needs a Live Answer
A backlink total describes how large an index is. The list that changes outreach is the linking pages that still exist, still point at the right URL, and do not come back as a missing page. Live links versus totals sets the $0.06 example against a suite subscription. Pause once the still-live list leaves the outreach or cleanup list unchanged.
When the Second Source Stops Paying
Enrich the terms set for this month. Keep the keyword, the locale, and the date on every number you compare. Pause the second source when it leaves that list unchanged.
If the French test agrees with Search Console on the terms you sell, for the same dates, leave HaloScan until the next French cluster. If the international pulls agree from one week to the next, move them to monthly. If the second volume read agrees on the head terms, keep the base and skip a second base.
